A deadly carjacking that left a man dead in Southeast Washington, D.C. on October 30, 2023, has led to a 19.5 year prison sentence for 23-year-old Maleek Thomas.

The sentence was handed down Friday by a federal judge in connection to the murder of Melvin Dock, Jr., in a shocking and brazen attack that has left investigators and community members stunned.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Thomas was arrested and charged with carjacking resulting in death and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

During sentencing, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro criticized Thomas’ actions, stating that ‘his reckless disregard for human life led to the senseless murder of Melvin Dock, Jr.’

Thomas’ attorney argued for a lighter sentence, citing the defendant’s age and lack of prior convictions. However, the judge ultimately sided with prosecutors, handing down the lengthy sentence.

The case highlights the ongoing struggle with violent crime in the nation’s capital, with many calling for stricter penalties and increased support for community programs to combat the issue.

Thomas will serve his 19.5 year sentence at a federal correctional facility, where he will be required to register as a violent offender upon release.
